If Skateworld had survived, it would have just turned 40. When it was opened in 1979 by Chief Minister Paul Everingham it was the only rink in the Northern Territory and was an instant hit, attracting 2000 people in its first two days. It became well known for its Friday night disco, and even featured an annual Christmas performance, like this one featuring Simone Veneman, Cristal Chovenac and Renee Barclay. When it closed in July 2006, owner Peter Beesley said "I have seen two to three generations of children grow up here".
