On the Inside (2023)
audio tour
On the Inside is a binaural sound work that tells the forgotten stories of Fannie Bay Gaol, the NT’s first major prison which opened in 1883 and closed in 1979.
Larrakia Elder Dr Richard Fejo, who through the project discovered his own relative’s story from inside, guides you through the prison, to meet those whose trajectories intersected here for one reason or another, for a day or for a lifetime. Built from original materials and oral histories, the work depicts hard labour, escapes and resistance. It's a story which doesn’t have an ending, that continues today in forms familiar and ever-troubling.
Commissioned by the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, the tour is binaural, featuring 3D immersive sound built with dozens of Darwin locals who shared stories and recreated scenes. The tour can be experienced through the free Darwin Audio Tours app.
