It's one of Darwin's great urban legends - that one night, a cheeky joker somehow placed a beer can and napkin on one of the figures of Justice, on the face of the old law courts in Darwin. Well this week on Facebook the hard evidence re-emerged in the form of this photo. Those involved know who they are, of course, but a few innocent parties ended up in the Judge's office getting questioned the next morning. The building itself lasted until a new Supreme Court building opened at State Square, and was demolished in 2000.

Forgotten Territory was a weekly photo column of historic images in the Northern Territory News which I curated from 2016 until 2019 supported by the collections of the Northern Territory Library and other cultural institutions around Australia, as well as local history Facebook groups.
