If you were to drive down Cavenagh Street in central Darwin exactly 60 years ago, this is what you'd have seen. Located on the site of the old Terminus Hotel in Chinatown, Darwin's famous Tree of Knowledge dominates the scene. It was used as a meeting place, postal address and community notice board. It is culturally significant to Larrakia people also who know it as Galamarrma. The Gordon's Don Hotel can be seen in the background, a pub once described as a "blood house - a fight every five minutes, weekends five a minute".

Forgotten Territory was a weekly photo column of historic images in the Northern Territory News which I curated from 2016 until 2019 supported by the collections of the Northern Territory Library and other cultural institutions around Australia, as well as local history Facebook groups.
